Walking in the Light
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
I walked later than usual last night, and it became dark. Thinking ahead, I had taken along a little light. As I plodded along, I thought about some words I’ve known since I was a young boy. I suppose it was Vacation Bible School where I first heard them as we pledged our allegiance to the Bible. “I will make it a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” For the first many years of my life, I’m pretty sure I didn’t know that was from an actual Bible verse as I stood with my hand on my heart.
I found my little light to be like the Bible. It was bright enough to see my next few steps and slightly lit the path a little ways forward. But I couldn’t see for miles ahead! Just my next steps (a lamp unto my feet) and the next ten or twenty feet (a light unto my path) until the path faded into the darkness. While it is true that the Bible shines brightly with the glorious light of the gospel and tells us about our ultimate destination, it does not tell us all the details of our personal journeys.
God hasn’t chosen to let us see our whole journey, just a few steps and a little distance. He wants us to walk, depending upon Him and trusting in His Word. But we’ve got to remember to use the light! If I’d left my light at home, I would have been trudging along somewhat blindly. Sadly, too many live this way when it comes to their walk of faith. They don’t use the lamp and light that God provides.
Today, make sure to walk in the light!
Father, Thank you for your inspired Word. Help me treasure it and hide it in my heart so I might not sin against you. I want to walk in the light, guided by You each step of the way. So please help me to spend much time with You in Your Word. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
