Thankful For The Word
“For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” I Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV
When we list everything we’re thankful for, we often focus on physical blessings like food, shelter, and heat. While we should be grateful for these blessings, I think we usually overlook the spiritual side of things. When Paul thought of the Thessalonian believers, gratitude grew in his heart. Why? Because they had received the Word of God and believed. This fact made him cry out to God with thanksgiving continually.
This verse is loaded with reasons to be thankful. It reminds us that we have God's Word. We can hear it, welcome it, and receive it. Furthermore, this Word is truth! Finally, it works in us to accomplish God’s purposes.
God didn’t have to give us His Word. He didn’t have to reveal Himself to us. And He didn’t have to work in us to believe. But He did! And that is a major cause for thanksgiving.
Are you thankful today for the Bible? Are you treasuring it? Are you being changed by it? If so, be grateful. If not, may I encourage you to return to the Book? You’ll be glad you did.
Dear Father in Heaven, Thank You for revealing Yourself in Your Word and for giving us truth that we can stand on. Help us treasure Your Word and hide it in our hearts so that we might not sin against You. Thank You for being such a great God. In Jesus’ Name, we pray, Amen.
