Riding Behind The Hearse
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Hebrews 9:27
As a minister, I have a unique perspective at a funeral. This is especially true when it comes to the funeral procession. I lead the casket to the hearse, follow directly behind it in my car, and then, when we arrive at the cemetery, get out and lead the casket to the grave.
Riding directly behind the hearse is not something that everyone gets to do. My last journey was quite long, and I observed several interesting sights. We passed by a middle-aged, overweight man (much like myself) walking to lose weight. We passed someone mowing their grass. Interestingly, we also passed by a local volunteer fire department where they were taking prom pictures.
All of these sights on what was, for many people, a “normal Saturday” reminded me of something quite striking - one life ends, but life itself goes on. That same Saturday, couples were married, babies were born, and high schoolers danced at the prom.
One day, I won’t be behind the hearse; I’ll be in it. On that day, my family will follow my casket to the cemetery, they’ll cry, and then they’ll return to their lives. That is as it should be. That is what I want. I’m ready for that day because I know Jesus is my Savior. I’ll be in heaven.
Do you have that assurance, friend? If not, make sure today.
