Quoting the Bible
Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Matthew 4:5-6 NKJV
The devil knows the Bible better than we do.
He's not even afraid to quote it!
In this particular passage, he quotes Scripture to the Lord Jesus. But the devil is not using Scripture properly; he is using it to tempt Jesus.
This reminds us that not everyone who uses a Bible verse does so for the right reasons—or even with the right motives. Some even use the Bible for sinful purposes!
We must weigh what someone is teaching or saying, even if they are quoting the Bible. It is possible to misinterpret the Bible and try to make it say what it does not say and mean what it doesn't mean.
We need to be like the Bereans. Acts 17:11 says, And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. (NLT)
Don’t assume someone is telling you the truth - check it out! Search the Scriptures and make sure you're walking in the light.
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You that we have Your Word. Thank You that we have it in our own language. Help me to be a good student of the Bible, rightly dividing it. Help me to listen to preaching and teaching with biblical discernment. And when the truth is proclaimed, help me to obey it right away. In Jesus' Name, I pray, Amen.
