Making A Name For Yourself
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12
The baseball great Ted Williams was the last player to bat over .400 for a season. Since 1941, no one has been able to match it. Williams stated his goal was to have people point to him and say, “There goes Ted Williams, the greatest hitter who ever lived.”
Ted Williams’ goal was to make a name for himself, and he did. But Williams is dead. He long ago hung up his baseball cleats, and he stepped into eternity in 2002. At that moment, it didn’t matter what he batted, how he fielded, or whether he was a Hall of Famer. What mattered was whether or not he knew Jesus Christ. Sadly for Williams, it appears that he did not. He resented his mother’s involvement with the church and described himself as a “spiritual” person.
Ted Williams’ life reminds us of two essential truths:
You must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to go to heaven
You must decide whose name you’re going to make famous - yours or Jesus’
Dear Heavenly Father, There is great temptation to try to make a name for myself in this world. Help me always remember how foolish it would be to do this. The only Name I want to make famous is the Name of Jesus. I want to point others to Him. In His great Name, I pray, Amen.
